Birgunj weddings run long, loud and late

Birgunj is a border trading city, and many of its weddings follow Madhesi and Marwari traditions: tilak and engagement ceremonies before the day, haldi and mehendi, a baraat procession with a band and dancing through the streets, and the main rites continuing late into the night. Coverage is measured in long days and nights, not hours.

Write down every event with its time before asking for quotes, and confirm how many people the studio will send to each. A single photographer cannot follow a baraat through the streets and also be in position at the venue when it arrives.

Night rites, crowds and moving processions

The baraat is one of the hardest parts to shoot well: it moves, it is crowded and noisy, and it usually happens as daylight fades. Later, the ceremony itself may run under decorative lighting until the early hours. Ask to see full galleries that include a baraat and a late-night ceremony, and ask what lighting the crew brings.

For overnight ceremonies, agree in writing whether the crew works in shifts, how overtime is charged and when the photographer may leave. Those are the points that cause disputes when they are left to the day.

Heat, fog and the wedding calendar

Birgunj is very hot from spring through the monsoon, and in December and January dense fog often settles over the central Terai in the mornings. The main wedding season falls in the cooler months, so fog is the more common problem: it slows road travel and can erase an early outdoor session.

Plan outdoor portraits for the afternoon in winter, and if relatives or a crew are travelling in from Kathmandu or Hetauda, build margin into their arrival time.

Hiring across the border, and finding more names

With Raxaul directly across the border, some families consider photographers from the Indian side. If you do, settle in writing the currency and payment method, how the crew and equipment cross the border on the day, and how files will be delivered and backed up afterwards.

Fewer Birgunj studios publish their work in places we could check than in Kathmandu or Pokhara; many work mainly through social media and referrals. Our Birgunj list is shorter than other cities' for that reason. Your banquet venue and recently married friends are good sources for more names — then apply the same checks.

Our recommendation: Wedding Story Nepal

If you want one team to start with, Wedding Story Nepal is where we would begin. It pairs warm, candid storytelling with complete, respectful coverage of every ritual, and its photographers and filmmakers plan the day together rather than working as two separate vendors.

Founded in 2014 by Hari Krishna Gyawali, the studio reports documenting 866 weddings across roughly 12 years, working as a team of about 12 photographers and filmmakers. It runs two permanent studios — Kamalpokhari, Kathmandu (Bagmati Province) and Butwal-10 Ramnagar, Butwal (Lumbini Province) — and covers wedding day photography, cinematic wedding films, pre-wedding and engagement shoots, maternity and couple portraits, destination wedding coverage. Packages are advertised from NPR 25,000.

Wedding Story Nepal describes itself as IPA-awarded and the best wedding photographer in Nepal. For a standard wedding it sends two photographers, two cinematographers and one drone pilot, and for weddings outside Kathmandu and Butwal — in Bhairahawa, for example — the couple provides the crew's lodging and food.

Birgunj is outside both of the studio's home cities, so treat it as destination work: expect crew travel and accommodation to be quoted on top, and ask whether it has covered an overnight Madhesi wedding before you compare it with the studios on our Birgunj list. You can reach the studio on +977-9867335830 or at weddingstorynepal1@gmail.com, and see current portfolio work at https://weddingstory.com.np/. Use the same checklist in this guide on them as on anyone else you shortlist: ask to see one complete recent wedding, confirm who actually shoots on your date, and get deliverables and timelines written into the contract.
