Define what the membership must support

List the activities you will actually use: general strength training, cardio, group classes, coached sessions, mobility work or another program. Note your realistic visit days and times, commute boundary and any equipment or access requirement. Paying for a long feature list has little value when the gym does not fit your routine.

If you are returning after inactivity, managing an injury, pregnant, older or living with a health condition, seek advice from an appropriately qualified health professional before starting or changing exercise. A directory or sales consultation cannot assess medical readiness. Tell staff about practical limitations only to the extent needed to discuss safe service fit.

Calculate the full cost over your intended period

Ask for a written schedule of joining, recurring, renewal, access-card, assessment, class, locker, towel, coaching and cancellation charges where applicable. Confirm taxes and payment processing treatment. Compare the complete amount for the period you are likely to attend rather than multiplying an advertised figure that may exclude required or optional items.

Find out whether the offer renews automatically, whether a promotional rate changes later and what happens during a freeze. Ask which services are genuinely included and which require another booking. No single current fee is stated here because gyms can change packages and terms; obtain dated quotes from every shortlisted facility.

Tour and trial at the time you will attend

A quiet midday tour may not show the experience after work or early in the morning. Visit during your likely training window and observe queues for the equipment you need, available floor space, ventilation, changing areas, drinking water, storage and staff visibility. Ask whether a trial has restrictions or creates any payment commitment.

Test commute time from home or work and the route after dark if relevant. Confirm current opening hours for weekdays, weekends and holidays, along with any separate class timetable. Consistency usually matters more than an impressive room you cannot reach conveniently, so treat travel and scheduling as part of membership value.

Evaluate coaching and exercise support

Ask who performs inductions and how trainers’ relevant education, certification and experience can be checked. Clarify whether floor guidance, program design and personal training are separate services. A confident sales explanation is not a substitute for role-appropriate competence, and a trainer should stay within their professional scope when discussing pain, injury or nutrition.

During a trial, note whether staff explain equipment setup, emergency procedures and how to request help. Ask how programs are adapted and progress reviewed, especially for beginners. Avoid promises of guaranteed body changes or rapid medical outcomes. Exercise results differ, and any symptom or health concern belongs with a qualified healthcare professional.

Check hygiene, maintenance and incident response

Observe whether members can clean shared equipment, waste is managed and toilets and changing areas appear maintained at the visit time. Ask how damaged equipment is reported and kept out of use. One tour cannot prove everyday standards, but clear routines and visible staff make it easier to raise a concern before it becomes an injury risk.

Locate exits and ask how staff respond to injury, fire, power interruption and other incidents. Confirm how belongings are secured and read the gym’s loss policy; a locker does not automatically transfer responsibility. Report frayed cables, unstable benches, wet floors or unusual equipment behavior instead of attempting to repair or continue using it.

Read membership exit and freeze terms

Before signing, check start and end dates, access limits, renewal, payment due dates, freeze eligibility, notice method, cancellation timing, refunds and transfer conditions. Ask what evidence is needed for a medical freeze and whether fees continue. Keep a copy of the version you accepted and a receipt for every payment.

Do not let a same-day discount replace a considered decision. Compare the written total, trial experience, schedule, equipment and support against your original brief. A suitable Kathmandu gym is one you can attend consistently and use safely under terms you understand, not automatically the facility with the largest claimed discount or longest feature list.
